DLDP launches the 'Digital Language Survival Kit'

In the run up to the European Day of Languages 2018, the Digital Language Diversity Project has launched the innovative and unique 'digital language survival kit', a new tool designed to help revitalise European, and the world’s, lesser-used and endangered languages.

The DLDP 'survival kit' is an instrument which aims at allowing regional and minority languages’ speakers and communities to, firstly, self-assess the degree of vitality of their language and, secondly, learn about the kind of concrete actions and initiatives that can improve this level of vitality.

In the recommendations, DLDP suggests some actions that may be taken — mostly at the grassroots level — to make a language progress towards improving its digital vitality.

DLDP, supported by the EU Erasmus+ Programme, is led by Dr Claudia Soria of the Institute for Computational Linguistics (ILC) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR), based in Pisa.

The DLDP partnership comprises the European Language Equality Network (ELEN), the department Sprachen Nordeuropas und des Baltikums (SNEB) of the Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz (JGU), the Basque organisation Elhuyar Fundazioa (ELH) and the Finnish association Karjalan Kielen Seura (KKS).

Speaking to the press, Dr Soria said that:

“We are delighted to publish the DLDP 'Digital Language Survival Kit' and urge all regional, minority, endangered language speakers in Europe and globally to make full use of it in order to improve the digital vitality of their language.”
